| The Z Pak and Yeast Infections
Women taking the Z Pak should be aware of another potential side effect of antibiotics: yeast infections. This irritating side effect can be an uncomfortable result of taking such a potent medicine as Zithromax.
When a woman takes antibiotics, the strong drugs can upset the balance of beneficial bacteria in her vagina. Just as the antibiotic kills or suppresses the bacteria at the site of infection, it may also suppress the bacteria necessary to keep the levels of yeast under control in a woman’s body. This is also the cause behind the itchy, dry mouth or fungus of the mouth that some people experience when taking antibiotics like the Z Pak.
When the delicate balance of bacteria is interrupted, the yeast normally present in healthy levels in a woman’s body may begin to grow. The yeast can multiply rapidly, upsetting the body’s balance and causing a painful yeast infection. The yeast, called Candida albicans, can cause a variety of irritating and uncomfortable symptoms. These symptoms can include itching, burning, unusual discharge, and redness of the surrounding tissues. If other symptoms are present such as fever, lower back pain, or missed periods, contact your doctor because these are not symptoms of a yeast infection. Instead, they may be indicative of a more serious problem such as a sexually transmitted disease or other infection.
If you have never experienced a yeast infection before, you should visit your doctor for a proper diagnosis. However, if you have experienced one previously, you may simply wish to self-treat with an at-home treatment kit. These kits are fairly inexpensive and can deliver relief quickly. However, if you are experiencing any other symptoms or have any questions about the condition, you should consult your doctor. It is not worth risking the health of your reproductive system to self-treat if you are unsure of the meaning behind your symptoms.
Statistically, approximately three out of four women will contract a yeast infection at some point. Many of these women may develop an infection while taking a course of antibiotics. If you are scheduled to take a course of antibiotics, talk to your doctor about your likelihood of developing a yeast infection, and monitor your body carefully for any changes.
